Letter to the editor | On sex and oppression

Published: November 1, 2012

Public trust and service are sacred.

In this country, we seek a more perfect union based on the belief that all are created equal. We face many challenges in that effort, including betrayal of trust, hypocrisy, bigotry and the traditional, cultural indoctrination that God is a male who wills use of penile power to inflict harm and to impregnate women randomly.

The use of sex and reproduction as power for control over others is not new. Institutions whose power and control are based on sex and the need for others to reproduce must be recognized for the harm they are imposing on the born and unborn.

Until our nation establishes a comprehensive meaning of God, let us agree that God is of nurturing benevolence and goodwill, available to all, but imposing on none. God — whether he, she or it — has no favorites but offers peace, satisfaction and joy for those in right relationship.

Many are caught between religious indoctrination and conscience in the cliche “pro-life.” An email explained that it’s easy for people to be “pro-life” when a fetus has no need for tax dollars to survive.

Once born and in need of food or education, it transforms from a precious gift from God to a lazy welfare parasite that needs to get a job.

While Penn State seeks justice, compassion and goodwill to combat harm through sex, let’s be mindful that forced reproduction and the invasion of responsible intimate relationships equate the U.S. to oppressive governments.
