Talking turkey, falconry in time for Thanksgiving in Happy Valley

Published: November 5, 2012

In this month’s edition of Good Life in Happy Valley, we’ll introduce you to Fran Gray, a Ferguson Township father of three, who hunts differently from most people. As a falconer, he catches and trains wild hawks and other raptors to bag small game. These days, he has a steady partner: his oldest child, who at 12, is following his father into the ancient sport.

In the Living Local section, we talk turkey — Lyn Garling’s organic birds, to be precise. She raises them on her Over the Moon Farm near Rebersburg. Every day, they’re growing plumper on a diet of clover, grass and additive-free feed for Thanksgiving tables.

Just in time for Veterans Day, the Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg is offering children a chance to dress up in historic uniforms and gear for photos. Back for a second year, the event draws from the museum’s special collection for public education. Joe Horvath, the museum educator, hopes to inspire a few future historians and teachers as well as create memories.

In this month’s Q&A interview, George Bartley recalls his experiences on Marion Township roads.

Bartley, the owner of G&L Buses, has driven school buses for the Bellefonte Area School District for 38 years, learning a few lessons along the way.

Susan Leath is president and publisher of the Centre Daily Times.
