PSU digest: Gingrich claims heavyweight title at Binghamton Open

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — Seven Penn State wrestlers placed in the top five at their weights, led by a victory from heavyweight Jon Gingrich, at the Binghamton Open on Sunday.

The Bald Eagle Area graduate and Nittany Lion sophomore posted a 4-0 record at 285 pounds, capped by a 9-1 major decision over Lock Haven’s Harry Turner in the finals as the Nittany Lions’ lone winer.

Most of the Nittany Lions competing were wrestling unattached.

Four Penn State wrestlers earned third-place finishes: Freshman Jimmy Gulibon went 6-1 with two major decisions at 133 pounds; Seth Beitz was 6-1 with two pins and two majors at 149; James Vollrath went 7-1 with a major, a technical fall and a pin at 157; and Morgan McIntosh posted a 4-1 mark at 197 with a pin and a major.

Nick Fischer posted a 6-1 record with a tech fall and two majors at 165 to take fourth while James Frascella, who was 5-2 with a pin, took fifth at 174.

In addition, Cameron Kelly went 2-2 at 133; Zack Beitzwent 2-2 at 141; Kyle Moran was 2-2 at 141; Michael Waters went 1-2 at 141; David Owens went 2-2 at 149 with a pin; Rex Lutz was 3-2 at 165; and Scott Syrek went 1-2 at 197.

Also competing were Derek Reber and freshman David Batkowski at 141 and at 184 as Penn State’s 17 wrestlers left with a 51-26 combined record.

The Nittany Lions open their season Friday, hosting Lehigh in the first of a full slate of sold out matches at Rec Hall. They then head to to West Virginia on Sunday afternoon.
