On Centre: Penns Valley | Rides aid efforts to conserve local land

On Centre: Penns ValleyNovember 12, 2012

It was a good weekend to be a bicycle enthusiast in Penns Valley.

A weekend of riding and events hosted by some local businesses helped raise money for Penns Valley Conservation Association and ClearWater Conservancy.

The region showed off its trails and roadways with two group rides Saturday that departed from the Elk Creek Cafe in Millheim.

The first started at 11 a.m. Saturday and challenged riders with 65 miles and steep climbs. The second ride, for beginners, left at 2 p.m. and consisted of 25 miles on paved roadway and rolling, valley terrain.

A special screening of the bicycle documentary “Reveal the Path” took place at 6 p.m. Saturday in Millheim, with proceeds benefiting Penns Valley Conservation Association.

The screening was followed by a raffle for a Salsa Horsethief bicycle, with proceeds benefiting the ClearWater Conservancy’s Galbraith Gap project.

In November 2011, ClearWater Conservancy acquired 152 acres of land located in Galbraith Gap, Harris Township. The group is proposing to develop a 1.1-mile sustainable trail through the land, eliminating a “missing link” between the Galbraith Gap trail head and the Rothrock State Forest trail system, according to ClearWater’s website.

The winning ticket

A Spring Mills woman recently won big playing the Pennsylvania Lottery.

According to the state lottery’s website, Clara Breon won $30,000 on an Bingo instant ticket she bought at Snappy’s in Centre Hall.

Breon said she was shocked after scratching the winning ticket, quickly calling family members to share the news, according to the website.
