Penn State women’s tennis: Devan McCluskey earns title

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Freshman Devan McCluskey capped off her first fall season with Penn State by earning the back draw title in her flight at the Western Michigan Super Challenge.

McCluskey defeated Aina Hernandez of Marquette 6-1, 6-3 for her 14th win of the fall, more than any Nittany Lion in more than seven years. Only Petra Januskova has more wins for Penn State this season with 17.

Meanwhile, Sarah Henderson had a 5-2 lead on Mary Hill of Bowling Green when Henderson had to retire with an injury.

In third-place matches, Chelsea Utting fell 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (5) to Erin Gebes of Marquette and Jacqueline Zuhse lost to Marquette’s Rocio Diaz 6-7(2), 6-2, 1-0(4). Also, Lisa Petruzillo was defeated by Notre Dame’s Darby Mountford 6-0, 6-0 and Emily Rivers fell 6-1, 6-0 to Valentina Schneider of Lousiville.

The Nittany Lions have the rest of the fall off before returning to the courts Jan. 19 in Akron, Ohio, to meet Middle Tennessee State.
