Penn State basketball: Lions coach Chambers gets four in 2013 recruiting class

Published: November 18, 2012

Penn State men’s basketball coach Patrick Chambers landed four players to his first full recruiting class when Geno Thorpe, Payton Banks, Graham Woodward and Julian Moore signed national letters of intent during the NCAA’s early signing period.

“I love this class,” Chambers said in a news release. “I think we’ve hit on a lot of different positions and they offer a lot to Penn Staters out there. They are serious about getting their degrees. They are also winners and they love to play and will represent Penn State the way it needs to be represented.”

All four were rated as three-star recruits by national recruiting services.

Thorpe, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound guard from Pittsburgh, was a Pennsylvania Class AAAA first-team selection last year and averaged 21.5 points per game. Thorpe led Shaler to the PIAA quarterfinals for the first time in school history.

“He is extremely athletic,” Chambers said of Thorpe. “He runs up and down the floor; is a really great finisher. He excels in the open floor; is able to defend anybody one through three. He has a great mid-range jumper and has to continue to work on his three. We are going to play him at the point; terrific combo guard.”

With Tim Frazier graduating, Thorpe figures to spend time in the backcourt with redshirt sophomore D.J. Newbill and junior Jermaine Marshall next season.

Banks is a 6-foot-6 forward from California who Chambers said can play multiple positions. “He literally can play one through four,” Chambers said.

Banks will add to an already versatile lineup with Newbill and Ross Travis already able to play various positions.

Woodward is a point guard from Minnesota who Chambers describes as “tough” and “nasty.” Frazier’s graduation will leave a void in the lineup that Woodward, Newbill and Thorpe will try to fill.

“It’s exactly what we need as Tim Frazier departs and we welcome Graham right in,” Chambers said. “I think it’s going to be a seamless transition.”

Moore is a 6-foot-10 center from Germantown Academy. “He was 6-7 a year-and-a-half ago, now he is 6-10,” Chambers said. “Jumps out of the building, shot blocker, great hands; great free throw shooter, I’m excited about Julian’s potential.”
