While turkey lovers are dreaming of carving into the Thanksgiving bird, some in Penns Valley are looking forward to the next celebration.
Business owners in Millheim are busy preparing for “ Merry Millheim“ a holiday celebration featuring local art, music, food and shopping.
The event is sponsored by the Millheim Business Community, a local merchants association.
The festival starts at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, with a handmade market on Main Street and an art show opening at the Green Drake Gallery. Saturday, Dec. 8, will bring a full day of events, and things will wrap up Sunday, Dec. 9, with music in the afternoon at Green Drake Gallery and at Elk Creek Cafe.
Organizers are also looking for volunteers to work one- to two-hour shifts during the festival.
Dana Morrison, assistant manager at the Green Drake, said the December show at the gallery, which debuts during the “Merry Millheim” festival, features the work of the Pilato family, “a uniquely talented family of artists from State College.”
“The show explores the importance of growing up in a family where creativity is modeled and nurtured,” she said in an email.
The show includes bronze sculptures by Mark Pilato, paintings by Michael Pilato, whose mural “Inspiration” draws crowds on Hiester Street in State College, and works by eight other family members, Morrison said.
Taking home the gold
Penns Valley Area School District students took home individual gold medals this month in an academic decathlon that tested their knowledge of literature, history and art and their essay writing ability.
Eight area school districts faced off in the event, which focused on Russia and the novel Doctor Zhivago, according to Penns Valley school officials.
The district finished in second place overall. Several students won individual gold medals, while others took home second- and third-place awards. The school will compete again in January, this time in economics, math, music and science.
