Swimming & Diving: PSU freshman earns Big Ten honor

Published: November 22, 2012

UNIVERSITY PARK — For the second consecutive week, Penn State men’s swimming and diving freshman Shane Ryan received Big Ten weekly honors, the conference office announced on Tuesday.

Ryan shared the honor with Purdue’s Layne Rogers after a tremendous performance against Indiana and Virginia this past weekend. It is the second weekly honor of his career.

Ryan placed first in all six of his events last weekend, continuing an 11-event win streak. The rookie competed in four relay events, aiding the Lions in victories in the 200 medley relay (1:28.30), 200 free relay (1:20.98), 400 medley relay (3:17.50) and 400 free relay (2:58.95). Penn State topped its opposition by over two seconds in both the 200 free relay and the 400 free relay.

Individually, the freshman took first in the 50 free for the second consecutive week with a time of 20.65 seconds. Ryan then went on to claim the 100 free, posting a new personal best time of 44.47 seconds. It was his second straight win in the 100 free, as well.

Ryan and the Nittany Lions return to action on Nov. 30 when the squad travels to Athens, Ga., for the annual Georgia Invitational. The weekend event will pit Penn State against some of the strongest swimmers in the nation.
