The Penn State women’s volleyball team is No. 1 once again.
The Nittany Lions earned the top seed Sunday for the NCAA Tournament, which kicks off next weekend. Penn State (29-2, 19-1 Big Ten) will face Binghamton (13-17) in their opener Friday night at Rec Hall.
The program, which won four straight national titles until having the run halted last season by eventual champion UCLA, will be seeking its sixth NCAA crown overall in its 32nd appearance in the tournament. Penn State and Stanford, the No. 2 seed, are the only schools that have played in every NCAA Tournament.
Friday’s first match will feature Yale (18-5) and Bowling Green (21-10) at 5 p.m. before the Nittany Lions and Bearcats, champions of the America East Conference tournament, face off at 7:30 p.m. The winners meet at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
This weekend’s winner will head to the regionals Dec. 9-10 in West Lafayette, Ind. No. 8 Minnesota, No. 9 Florida State and No. 16 Kentucky are the other seeded teams in Penn State’s quarter of the bracket, and Notre Dame, Ohio State and regional host Purdue are also in group.
Texas earned the No. 3 seed and will host one regional, and Nebraska is fourth and hosts another regional in Omaha, Neb. Stanford will play through the Berkley, Calif., bracket.
The national championships will be played in Louisville, Ky., on Dec. 15 and 17.
