Campus Corner: Rodgers earns academic honor with Syracuse football

Sam Rodgers, a former State College athlete, is one of three Syracuse football players to earn Capital One Academic All-District honors. The award recognizes players’ performance in the classroom, on the football field and in the community.

Rodgers, who is the long snapper for the Orangemen, has two tackles this season.

Syracuse (7-5) will play West Virginia in the Pinstripe Bowl in New York’s Yankee Stadium on Dec. 29.

Wrestling

Mitchell Port (Bellefonte, Edinboro) is 6-1 at 141 pounds. He is ranked fifth in the country

Scott Bosak (State College, Cornell) has a 10-4 record at 157 pounds.

Leo Wortman (Bellefonte, Stevens Tech) is 6-2 at 157 pounds

Erik Galloway (State College, Buffalo) a transfer from Pittsburgh, Galloway is 6-1 at 133 pounds for Buffalo.

Basketball

Tyann McDaniel (Bellefonte, Misericordia) has 16 rebounds, 21 assists, one block, 12 steals and an 8.2 scoring average. Misericordia is 5-0.

Brian Scholly (State College, Juniata) averages 4.8 rebounds and 16.3 points per game. He also averages 2.0 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.7 blocks. Juniata is 5-1.

Kate McDonald (State College, Juniata) is averaging 13.2 rebounds and 17.0 points. She also averages 3.2 assists, 2.6 steals and 1.6 blocks. Juniata is 4-1.

Liz Wortman (Bellefonte, Juniata) has played in three games and averages 0.7 rebounds.

Jena Matter (Bellefonte, Mansfield) has 28 rebounds, nine assists, two blocks and 9.8 points per game. Mansfield is 2-2.

Mitch Moyer (Bald Eagle Area, PSU-Altoona) has two rebounds, two assists, two steals and averages 4.4 points. Altoona is 3-2.

Alidia Strouse (State College, PSU-Altoona) has 48 rebounds, two assists, two blocks, 10 steals and 9.7 points. Altoona is 0-6.

Pat St. Andrews (State College, PSU-Behrend) is averaging 5.6 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 0.6 steals. Behrend is 4-1.

Brittany Butterworth (BEA, Pitt-Greensburg) has 20 rebounds, 10 assists, nine steals and averages 8.2 points. Pitt-Greensburg is 2-3.

Swimming

Jenny Ryan (Bellefonte, Grove City) finished sixth in the 400-yard individual medley in a time of 4 minutes, 35.95 seconds, which is a provisional NCAA qualifying time.

Marie Ginger (State College, Gettysburg) placed third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.39 in the Final Fall Fast Festival.

Football

Shay Ceglar (State College, Shippensburg) finished the year with an assisted tackle and a fumble recovery. Shippensburg went 11-2.

Kurt Walker (Philipsburg-Osceola, Shippensburg) had four solo tackles and two assists, 1 1/2 tackles for a loss of one yard, one-half sack, one quarterback hurry and one interception returned 80 yards for a touchdown.

Colby Way (State College, Buffalo) had 58 tackles, 28 of them solo, seven sacks for minus-30 yards, 10 1/2 tackles for loss for minus-39 yards, one interception returned for 22 yards, two passes broken up, three passes defended, one quarterback hurry and one fumble recovery. The Bulls finished 4-8.

Reid Vanderlinden (State College, Johns Hopkins) had two tackles for the Blue Jays, who finished at 10-2 after losing to Mount Union 55-13 in the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Garrett Nicholson (State College, Ithaca) was named to the All-Empire 8 team as a placekicker. He made all 28 extra point attempts and also made 6 of 9 field goals. Ithaca was 6-4.
