Girls’ basketball previews: Philipsburg-Osceola

December 8, 2012

Head coach: Doug Myers (second season)

Last year: 5-17

Assistant coaches: Dennis Arnold, Dave Brown, Bill Myers

Key losses: Lauren Simcox

Returning letterwinners: Briana Rusnak, Cassidy Bauman, Abby Showers, McKenzie Burge, Katie Meersand

Key newcomers: Haylee Hayward, Kylie Whitehead

The skinny: The Lady Mounties are feeling optimistic this season with four returning starters and only one senior lost from last season. … Big loss in that one senior in Lauren Simcox, who was county’s leading scorer at 15.5 points per game. … P-O will look for big contributions from post player Briana Rusnak (7.7 ppg last season), who has been battling injuries for most of her high school career. Coach Myers said Rusnak has been working on her physical training and conditioning and is “100 percent ready to go.” … P-O also will return Alyssa Myers, the coach’s daughter, who missed all but six games last season with a fractured ankle. … Top player off the bench last year was guard McKenzie Burge. … The Lady Mounties open their season Monday hosting DuBois.

Coach Myers says: “The fact that we have a lot of kids with varsity experience, we definitely want to build on last season. It’s a tough league, very competitive, and we just want to make sure that every night we’re competitive. We can’t make the excuse that we are young. We have to play now. We have to give it everything we have. There are no excuses anymore.”
