COLLEGE TOWNSHIP — A tractor-trailer slammed into a column of an overpass on U.S. Route 322 on Monday afternoon, separating the cab from the truck and pinning the driver inside.
The accident occurred just after 3 p.m. directly under the Branch Road overpass in the westbound lanes.
Both westbound lanes were closed from the state Route 45 on-ramp to state Route 26 in College Township but had reopened Monday night.
The truck is thought to have left the road, flipped onto its side, then struck a column. Its cab with the driver still in it separated from the vehicle and was pinned between a bridge column and the trailer.
The driver, who wasn’t identified, had to be extricated from the cab. He was removed on a stretcher. He suffered minor to moderate injuries.
A witness who lives 300 yards from the scene of the wreck, said he heard a loud boom, as if something had hit his home.
Both westbound lanes on Route 322 were closed as the truck spilled its cargo — which appeared to be dry goods — over the road.
It was raining steadily at the time of the accident.
