Campus Corner: McDonald keys Juniata success

Kate McDonald is a key reason why the Juniata women’s basketball team is off to a 6-1 start and on Monday she was recognized for it.

The State College graduate was named the Landmark Conference Player of the Week after averaging more than 20 points per game in a pair of road victories for the Eagles. McDonald scored 22 points in a 73-60 win over DeSales and added 19 in a 76-59 victory over Eastern.

“Kate gives it her all each week,” said coach Danny Young-Uhrich said of McDonald’s conference honor. “She works very hard each game. She scored a lot of points for us this week and really to Kate, that’s a secondary emphasis.”

McDonald is averaging a double-double per game with an 18.0 scoring average and an average of 10.7 rebounds. She is also averaging 3.3 assists, 2.7 steals and 1.9 blocks per game. In last week’s win over Eastern she scored 19 points while being on the floor for only 21 minutes.

 

Wrestling

Mitchell Port (Bellefonte, Edinboro) won the PSAC championship at 141 pounds as Edinboro won the team title. Port is ranked fourth in the country and has a 10-1 record. He beat Clarion’s Sam Sherlock, a former Penn State wrestler, 11-1 in the finals. Teammate AJ Schopp, a Tyrone grad, won the 133-pound title.

Scott Bosak (State College, Cornell) is 10-5 so far.

Leo Wortman (Bellefonte, Stevens Tech) has a 6-3 record.

Erik Galloway (State College, Buffalo) fell to 9-3 on the season after a loss to No. 3 Scott Sentes in Buffalo’s 28-7 loss to No. 11 Central Michigan.

Tom Traxler (Bellefonte, Kutztown) is on the roster but has not wrestled a match yet.

 

Basketball

Tyann McDaniel (Bellefonte, Misericordia) has 18 rebounds, 23 assists, one blocked shot, 15 steals and a n8.8 scoring average. Misericordia is 5-1.

Emily Suhey (State College, Villanova) has six rebounds, three assists, one steal and averages 1.5 points per game while playing an averaging fo 6.6 minutes per game. Villanova is 7-1.

Brian Scholly (State College, Juniata) has a 14.4 scoring average. He also averages 4.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists, .9 steals and .4 blocks per game. Juniata is 7-2.

Liz Wortman (Bellefonte, Juniata) averages .4 points, .4 rebounds and .4 assists per game.

Jena Matter (Bellefonte, Mansfield) has 38 rebounds, 12 assists, three blocks, three steals and averages just over 10 points per game. She had 12 points and 10 rebounds in a 72-57 loss to West Chester last week. Mansfield is 3-3.

Mitch Moyer (BEA, PSU-Altoona) has six rebounds, three assists, two steals and averages 3.1 points per game. Altoona is 3-4.

Alidia Strouse (State College, PSU-Altoona) has 57 rebounds, three assists, two blocks, 16 steals and averages 9.3 points per game. Altoona is 0-8.

Pat. St. Andrews (State College, PSU-Erie) has a 5.2 scoring average and also averages 2.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.3 steals per game. Erie is 4-2.

Brittany Butterworth (Bald Eagle Area, Pitt-Greensburg) has 23 rebounds, 12 assists, 12 steals and a 7.6 scoring averages. Greensburg is 3-4.

 

Soccer

Izabel Scott (State College, Slippery Rock) was named to the NSCAA Atlantic Region third team as a defender. A junior, Scott played the right back on defense and also had a goal and two assists. Slippery Rock reached the NCAA Round of 16 and wound up ranked 14th in the country.
