Monken headed to Southern Miss

Published: December 11, 2012

Todd Monken was named as the next head football coach at Southern Miss on Tuesday.

Monken takes over for the fired Ellis Johnson, who was immediately let go after a disastrous 0-12 mark in his lone season at the helm.

Southern Miss hadn't finished with a losing record since going 3-7-1 in 1993 and went without a victory for the first time since an 0-6 mark in 1925.

Monken was Oklahoma State's offensive coordinator when the Cowboys set numerous records in 2011, and helped the program to a 7-5 record and a trip to the Heart Of Dallas Bowl this season.

"We said going into this search that we wanted to find a dynamic leader with the character to lead our program back to prominence, so," said Southern Miss athletics director Hammond. "I believe today, with the hiring of Todd Monken, we have accomplished that."

The Illinois native previously spent four years as a wide receivers coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars and was LSU's passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach from 2005-06.
