A quarterback who lives halfway across the country might be ready to make Penn State’s spring drills more interesting.
Iowa Western Community College’s Jake Waters is revealing his college decision at an 11:30 a.m. news conference Thursday, according to coach Scott Strohmeier. Waters has trimmed his list to Penn State and Kansas State.
Waters will enroll in a four-year college next month, meaning he can begin practicing when spring drills open in March. He has two years of eligibility remaining.
Waters has been the subject of an intense recruiting battle since helping Iowa Western capture the National Junior College Athletic Association title on Dec. 2.
Penn State coach Bill O’Brien met with Waters in Council Bluffs, Iowa, earlier this week.
Texas and Alabama recently contacted Iowa Western about Waters while Kansas State arranged a phone conversation between Waters and current quarterback Collin Klein after last weekend’s Heisman Trophy presentation.
A first-team NJCAA All-American selection, the 6-foot-2, 215-pound Waters completed 244 of 333 passes for 3,501 yards and 39 touchdowns this season. Iowa Western averaged 62.8 points per game.
Sophomore Steven Bench is currently the only quarterback scheduled to participated in Penn State’s spring drills. Virginia prospect Christian Hackenberg, one of the nation’s top recruits, won’t arrive on campus until June.
