Hundreds lose power in Centre Region

December 17, 2012

More than 700 West Penn Power customers briefly lost power Monday afternoon in State College and College and Harris Townships.

Company spokesman Tom Kearney said a wire came down near the old Ponderosa Steakhouse, 1630 S. Atherton St.

“When a crew got there, they determined they had to turn the circuit off to make it safe to fix,” he said.

A total of 769 customers were without power when the crew did so at 2:45 p.m. By 3:30, Kearney said power had returned to all.

Kearney said the reason for the wire coming down was unclear.

Alpha Fire Company crews also responded and regional Fire Director Steve Bair said the wire caused a small fire in the brush when it fell but that, when energy personnel cut the power, the fire “took care of itself.”
