Trade jingle bells for baseballs with holiday clinic

December 26, 2012

Christmas is over. There is snow on the ground. People are starting to look at decorations and mull just when they should take them down. And parents? Parents are already counting the days until school starts again.

Sounds like baseball weather to me.

Thursday and Friday, the Moshannon Valley YMCA is hosting a Holiday Baseball Clinic. Today from 9 a.m. to noon for kids aged 6 to 9, and Friday from 1:30-4:30 p.m. for those 10-14, a little bit of spring will come to the Y’s Keno Beezer Baseball Complex.

The young players dreaming of making it to play in college or even the big leagues will be tutored by those who have had that dream come true. Josh Potter, who pitched for the Baltimore Orioles, and Matt Curtis, a middle infielder at Slippery Rock University, will direct the clinic, with additional college players on deck.

But the designated hitter is Matt Adams, a Philipsburg-Osceola graduate currently with the St. Louis Cardinals. Yeah, the Cardinals that were just a game away from the World Series this year, that’s them.

Adams will become a motivational speaker for a couple of days, talking to kids about “reaching their goals through hard work and dedication to the game.” And naturally, signing a few autographs, too.

The price to become one of the Boys of Summer for a few hours in snowy December? Just $30 for members, $40 for non-members.

Ah, but motivating your kids and having time to clean up the cyclone of Christmas presents in your living room while they are occupied for a while? Priceless.
