Letter to the editor: Fed up with Codes

Published: December 27, 2012

This past year, my home was searched three times by local code enforcement. The last visit came with less than 24 hours’ notice.

The Centre Region Council of Governments assures me it saves lives, but if that was the issue and the rationale, everyone’s home would be searched.

My home is searched every three years.

The implication of the past series of visits is that there was an issue and I’ve been living with it — at the very least — throughout those three visits.

That can’t be good.

Luckily, I’ve lived in my home for more than 16 years and it’s safe.

That’s my agreement with the landlord.

Issues seem to be created when new maintenance personnel do something contrary to code.

Sadly, my apartment remained in the search queue, regardless.

I’m surprised that, given the character and integrity of the officers I know, no one in code enforcement has stood up to the COG and said, “No, I won’t do an unconstitutional search of someone’s home. I need to inspect a rental unit before it is occupied and becomes a home.”

Maybe next time.
