As the sun rises behind him Lee Ahern cross country skis through Circleville Park in State College, Pa., Friday, January 20, 2012. The first snow of the year fell overnight in State College giving Ahern his first chance of the season to break out his skis. Nabil K. Mark

This year was tumultuous and the Centre Region became the center of the universe for a time, with satellite feeds beaming every move made in the Jerry Sandusky trial at the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte to the waiting world. The death of Joe Paterno and the removal of his statue in the wake of the Freeh report also garnered national attention.

But there were other things happening here as well — positive things. The Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon raised $10.6 million. Visitors and residents enjoyed the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, People’s Choice Festival in Boalsburg and Philipsburg’s Heritage Days.

Centre Daily Times staff photographer Nabil K. Mark, Christopher Weddle and Abby Drey selected their favorite photos of 2012. This is a sample of their best.
