MANHEIM — Bald Eagle Area senior Jake Taylor earned his third Manheim Tournament title the hard way.
Taylor completed his Manheim trifecta with a 3-1 victory over Eastons Tyler Greene in Fridays 182-pound final. This victory included a grueling twist as Taylor needed a takedown in the sudden-victory period to outlast Greene, a PIAA seventh-place finisher at 182 pounds last season. Taylor, a returning PIAA bronze medalist, won Manheim titles at three different weights, prevailing at 170 in 2011 and 171 in 2010.
Another Eagle joined Taylor atop this years podium. Senior Nate Sharkey completed his run at 220 pounds by edging Reynolds Logan Rickert 3-2 in the finals. Sharkey placed second in the same weight class last year. He went 3-0 in this years tournament, improving his 2012-13 record to 8-1.
The duo helped BEA place eighth in the 13-team field. Senior Aaron Varner recovered from a loss in Thursdays semifinals to finish third at 195 pounds. Varner defeated Susquenitas Jay Bennett 8-7 in the consolation finals. Travis Giedroc went 3-2 and placed fourth at 113 and Ben Verbitskey went 4-2 and placed fifth at 170.
Easton crowned three champions and placed three other wrestlers in the finals to defend its team title with 232.5 points. North Allegheny finished second with 170.
Penn State recruit and Kiski Area senior Matt McCutcheon dominated North Alleghenys Alex DiCiantis 17-2 in the 195-pound final.
