High school wrestling: Bellefonte’s Garrett Poorman places fifth at Powerade

— Senior heavyweight Garrett Poorman led Bellefonte by finishing fifth in the Powerade Tournament at Canon-McMillan High School.

Poorman was pinned by Blair Academy star Brooks Black in Saturday’s semifinals and Mifflinburg’s Nazar Mironenko in the consolation semifinals. Poorman recovered to pin Solanco’s Bo Spiller in 2:56 in the fifth-place bout.

Senior Nick Shawley fell to Saegertown’s Dylan Reynolds 4-3 in Saturday’s consolation rounds. Shawley came within one victory of placing at 182 pounds.

In the tournament’s most anticipated final, Kennard-Dale junior Chance Marsteller defeated Canon-McMillan senior Cody Wiercioch 3-2 in the ultimate tiebreaker period at 170 pounds. Both wrestlers own two PIAA titles.

Benton senior and Penn State recruit Zain Retherford defeated Blair Academy’s Mason Manville 2-0 at 138. Blair Academy had 13 medalists and breezed to the team title.
