Penn State sweeps track & field awards

Penn State swept all of the Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors on both the men’s and women’s sides following performances in the season-opening Penn State Relays on Saturday.

For the women, Mahagony Jones was honored on the track and Erika Morgan in the throws, and for the men Sancho Barrett won in track and Jon Hendershot in the throws.

Jones finished third in the 60-meter dash finals after turning in a 7.44-second run in the preliminaries while also helping the 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams to victories. Barrett was second in the 60-meter hurdles in a personal-best 8.03 seconds.

Morgan cleared a personal-best 5 feet, 10 1/2 inches in the high jump, beating the field by five inches or more and placing third on the Nittany Lions’ all-time list. Hendershot also won the high jump by clearing 7 feet, 1/2 inch.

The team hosts the Nittany Lion Challenge on Saturday.
