Letter to the editor | Follow the money

Published: January 11, 2013

So much has been made of the $60 million fine levied against the Penn State athletic department by the NCAA. There have been news conferences, committees and even lawsuits — all in the name of that money.

But what about the other fine?

In July, the Big Ten announced that Penn State would forfeit its share of the conference bowl payout — about $3 million a year — for each of the four years Penn State isn’t eligible for a bowl. And this money would “be donated to established charitable organizations in Big Ten communities dedicated to the protection of children.”

Well, not a word has been said since about that money and what charities it would go to. Where is this money going? I hope it’s not simply going into the conference coffers while hoping we all forget about it.
