ST. LOUIS — A month after beating Penn State in the national championship game, North Carolina got another win over the Nittany Lions in womens soccer Friday night, with Crystal Dunn picking up the Hermann Trophy as the top womens player in the U.S.
Dunn was awarded the honor at the Missouri Athletic Club, beating out the other two finalists, Nittany Lion Christine Nairn and Virginias Caroline Miller. Dunn and the Tar Heels defeated Penn State 4-1 in the national championship game in early December.
Nairn, who was looking to join Christie Welsh in 2001 as Penn State Hermann Trophy winners, was the Big Ten Midfielder of the Year and led the nations highest scoring team with 17 goals and 12 assists. Dunn, a junior, had five goals and five assists in 17 games in helping the Heels to the title.
Marylands Patrick Mullins won the award on the mens side.
