Fire damages mobile home in Patton Township

— A fire Thursday night ravaged a trailer home off North Atherton Street, but a young couple and their baby escaped unharmed.

The blaze engulfed the residence at 118 Toter Lane in the Franklin Manor Mobile Home Park. Alpha Fire Company firefighters, who arrived in four engines, took about 20 minutes to extinguish the flames.

Afterward, as onlookers gathered in the adjacent Hi-Way Pizza parking lot, smoke continued to pour from the ruined structure.

Henry Weaver, who lives next door at 122 Toter Lane, said he smelled a strong burning odor, looked outside at his neighbor’s trailer and saw fire spreading from a bedroom.

“It was very bad,” he said.

As they stood with family members and neighbors outside their home, the couple declined to give their names or talk about the fire. According to neighbors, the couple’s 6-month old daughter was taken from the scene by her grandfather.

Neighbors also said the fire claimed a pet pig but the couple saved an iguana and some dogs. Red Cross workers came to help the displaced residents.

Firefighters evacuated neighboring residents, but the fire damaged none of the surrounding homes. Alpha Fire Chief Keith Yocum said the cause was not immediately apparent, and a fire marshal will investigate.

At 124 Toter Lane, Rosanne Shoffner was asleep when the fire broke out. After her fiance woke with the news, she put her shoes on and ran outside to see flames shooting out of her neighbor’s windows.

“It was coming out the back,” she said.

Yocum said firefighters encountered no problems dousing the blaze. No one was injured, he said.

Patton Township and Ferguson Township police assisted Alpha fire police at the scene.
