Recap: Penn State vs. Nebraska

Published: January 19, 2013

Freshman Shavon Shields dropped a career-high 29 points to lead the Nebraska Cornhuskers to a 68-64 win over the Penn State Nittany Lions in a Big Ten clash at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Shields was nearly perfect shooting the basketball, hitting on 10-of-11 attempts from the field and 8-of-8 from the foul line as Nebraska (10-9, 1-5 Big Ten) snapped a five-game losing streak. Ray Gallegos added 15 points and Brandon Ubel scored 12 off the bench, outscoring the Penn State reserves by himself.

Jermaine Marshall netted 18 points for Penn State (8-10, 0-6) while D.J. Newbill filled the stat sheet with 11 points, seven boards and six assists.

Nebraska overcame an early 7-1 deficit and took a 33-28 lead into halftime after shooting 46.7 percent from the floor while Penn State hit at just a 35.7 percent clip.

After a balanced second half, Penn State trailed by two with 16 seconds remaining. Marshall penetrated and drew a foul on Shields but missed both free throws, closing the door on a potential Penn State comeback as Ubel made both of his attempts at the other end to put Nebraska ahead for good.

Nebraska managed a win despite being outrebounded, 36-27.
