Penn State track and field: Lions lock up pair of wins

Published: February 4, 2013

— Penn State won both the men’s and women’s titles Saturday at the Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup at the Ashenfelter Track.

The meet also marked the inaugural John Lucas Athlete of the Meet awards, given to Mahagony Jones and Robby Creese. The honor was named after Dr. John Lucas, a longtime Penn State professor, a former Nittany Lion coach and respected Olympic historian who passed away last November.

Jones earned wins in the 60- and 200-meter dashes and helped the 4x400 relay team to victory along with Dynasty McGee, Kirsten Nieuwendam and Kiah Seymour.

Creese won the 800 and ran a leg for the winning distance medley relay team with State College’s Alex Shisler, Ryan Brennan and Nick Scarpello.

The men’s 4x400 relay also earned a win with Emunael Mpanduki, Casimir Loxsom, Matt Gilmore and Brandon Bennett-Green.

Also, Marlene Ricketts and Brian Leap each won the triple jump, Jane Swenson was first in the shot put, Will Barr took the 35-pound weight throw and Melissa Kurzdorfer won the women’s 20-pound weight toss. Sancho Barrett was first in the 60 hurdles.

The Nittany Lion women took the team title at 177.50, well ahead of runner-up Princeton’s 86. The Penn State men won with a 133 total, with Connecticut second at 106.
