Penn State gymnastics: Columbus native Howard honored for efforts against Ohio State

From CDT staff reportsFebruary 5, 2013

— On the heels of an impressive weekend performance in helping the top-ranked Penn State men’s gymnastics team beat Ohio State at Rec Hall, freshman Trevor Howard picked up multiple awards from the Big Ten Conference on Monday, grabbing both Gymnast and Freshman of the Week honors.

The native of Columbus, Ohio, won three individual events as well as the all-around title in a 444.300-432.300 victory on Saturday night.

Howard placed first in the floor exercise, still rings and parallel bars. He has the second-best all-around scoring average in the NCAA this season at 87.200, trailing only Michigan’s Adrian de los Angeles’ average of 87.983, and is in the top 10 nationally in the rings, vault, bars and high bar.

Penn State, which will send competitors to the Winter Cup in Las Vegas this week, has had 13 conference freshman of the week winners since the award began in 2010, more than any other Big Ten program.
