Penn State has found its new defensive assistant.

A source confirmed to the Centre Daily Times that Marshall defensive assistant Anthony Midget will join Penn State’s coaching staff. The source spoke on the condition of anonymity because Penn State hasn’t announced Midget’s hiring.

Midget will fill the open position created when secondary coach John Butler was promoted to defensive coordinator. Butler received the position held by Ted Roof, who left Penn State to become Georgia Tech’s defensive coordinator last month.

Marshall hired Midget last month. Midget, a standout cornerback on a Virginia Tech team that reached the 1999 Bowl Championship Series title game, worked at Georgia State from 2008-12. Midget served as Georgia State’s defensive coordinator in 2012. He also coached the Panthers’ secondary and special teams.

Penn State coach Bill O’Brien said at Wednesday’s signing day news conference that he’s “in the process” of filling the open position on the Nittany Lions’ staff.

“That will probably be something that gets filled in the next week or so,” O’Brien said.

It appears the timetable has been accelerated because Midget informed Marshall coach Doc Holliday he accepted the Penn State job, according to Marshall sources.
