Girls basketball: State College suffers tough loss at Altoona

Published: February 7, 2013

— Altoona’s Darby Lee hit two free throws with seven seconds left as the Lady Mountain Lions edged State College 55-53 on Wednesday.

After Lee sank her second free throw, State College coach Bethany Irwin called timeout. Jenna Altomare then dribbled into Altoona’s end and passed the ball to Kyla Irwin, whose last-second shot rattled around the rim before dropping out.

Altomare led the Lady Little Lions (14-8) with 18 points. Kyla Irwin added 14.

Altoona (12-6) outscored State College 19-11 in the fourth quarter. McKenzie Hatch hit six 3-pointers to lead Altoona with 18 points. The Lady Mountain Lions finished with 10 3-point field goals.

“We tried a little bit of a different defense because we think we might play Altoona again in the district playoffs,” Bethany Irwin said. “It frustrated them in the first half. The game kept going back-and-forth. It was a great game for the kids to participate in. It will help us in the district playoffs.”

The game marked the end of State College’s regular-season schedule. The Lady Little Lions will open the District 6 Class AAAA playoffs against a to be determined opponent later this month.
