Boy's basketball: Light nearly leads Bellefonte past Central

From CDT staff reportsFebruary 8, 2013

MARTINSBURG – Bellefonte got off to slow starts in the first and third quarters, but rallied in the frames that followed to nearly upend Central before falling 50-48 on Thursday.

Tanner Light led all scorers with 16 points for the Red Raiders, while Austin Cunningham led the Dragons with 14.

Nick Leiter added 10 points, while Khasim Buey and Mitch Grasser each contributed seven for the Red Raiders.

“I thought our effort was great,” said Bellefonte coach Darin Hazel. “The last time we played them we were really out of the game but the kids really played within themselves tonight.”

After falling behind 15-7 through one quarter, Light sparked the Raiders in the second with two 3-pointers to get his squad to within 22-21 at the break.

“They played zone against us,” Hazel said. “(Light) started off cold but then he found a rhythm and got us back in the game.”

The Dragons came out of the half aggressively and won the third quarter 12-7, a deficit that even a 20-point fourth quarter couldn’t overcome for the Red Raiders.

“We’re playing good basketball right now,” Hazel said. “I think we are a tough out regardless of what our records says.”
