Boys basketball: Bald Eagle Area captures Mountain League title

Published: February 16, 2013

— The Bald Eagle Area boys’ basketball team can take the weekend and relax — head coach Bill Butterworth said his team has earned it.

The Eagles (20-2) clinched the Mountain League championship and now get a first-round bye in the District 6 playoffs after beating Central 61-51 on Friday night.

“The kids played hard tonight. They knew what was at stake ... they came out pretty fired up and we had a big second quarter and it just carried over throughout the game,” Butterworth said. “Monday we’ll get back to practice and just go through our regular drills.”

Dennis Fisher led BEA with 29 points while Brandon Gettig added 11 for the Eagles.

The Eagles were consistently good all season.

“Great season this year,” Butterworth said. “Both of our losses were to very good teams.”

Only Central Mountain and Tyrone were able to crack the Eagles. Now it will be up to either Marion Center or Cambria Heights to oust the top-seeded Eagles from the District 6 Class AA Tournament. It’ll be a tough task as Butterworth believes his team is playing with inspired vigor.

“I think we’re prepped and ready to go,” Butterworth said.
