Girls basketball: Penns Valley girls take tourney final

From CDT staff reportsFebruary 17, 2013

— Kelsey Boone went out in style.

The lone senior on the Penns Valley girls basketball team scored a career-high 26 points, grabbed 20 rebounds and blocked four shots as the Lady Rams closed out their season with a 59-21 romp against West Branch on Saturday.

Penns Valley controlled the game, the rescheduled title clash from its Christmas Tournament title game, from the start. The Lady Rams (7-14) did not allow West Branch to score more than seven points in any quarter.

Boone was outstanding in her final game and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. “I was really proud of Kelsey as our only senior,” Penns Valley coach Andrea Borland said. “She came out and knew it was her last game and put it all out there.”

Tangie Lyons added 13 points for the Rams. Mackenzie Ironside had seven steals, five assists and three rebounds. Karli Ripka added eight points, four rebounds and three assists, while Cheyenne Swartz notched four assists.

“We started off playing very well,” Borland said of the Lady Rams’ season. “Then, we got ourselves in funk. We ended the season very well. We beat Clearfield on Monday and (Saturday) was really team effort. We wanted to end on a high note.”

Ashley Struble joined Boone and Ironside on the All-tournament team. West Branch’s Melesha Ahlberg, who had 10 points in the title game, also made the team.
