Penn State softball: Lions earn first win of season

— Penn State exploded for 14 hits and earned its first win of the season 10-2 over New Mexico State on Saturday afternoon.

Macy Jones had a big day, pitching the complete-game win with six strikeouts and blasting a grand slam. She finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and six RBIs.

Cassidy Bell was 3-for-3 with a double and home run while knocking in the other four runs. Alyssa Renwick added a pair of hits and Alyssa Sovereign added a double as nine different players had hits for the Nittany Lions (1-3).

Earlier Saturday, Penn State lost 14-3 to Texas Tech as the Raiders collected 12 hits off Nittany Lion pitching. Adriana Perez belted two homers and knocked in six runs and Katelyn Williams also homered for Texas Tech.

Karlie Habitz homered and knocked in two runs for Penn State. Christy Von Pusch started and took the loss, unloading five wild pitches and 11 walks.

Late Friday night, Penn State lost 10-2 to New Mexico State as the Aggies racked up seven of their 12 hits off starter Jones. New Mexico State knocked three homers in the win.

Bell had two hits including a homer and both RBIs in the loss and Renwick also had two hits.

Penn State finishes play in New Mexico against Missouri-Kansas City on Sunday morning.
