Penn State baseball: ETSU outlasts Lions, 9-7

Published: February 18, 2013

— Penn State racked up 12 hits but could not keep up with East Tennessee State in a 9-7 loss to close their three-game season-opening series Sunday.

JC Coban was 3-for-5 and belted a two-run home run to pace the offense for the Nittany Lions (1-2), who saw seven different players pick up hits. Luis Montesinos and Steve Snyder also had three hits apiece, with a double for Snyder, and James Coates had a pair of hits. Matt Paradise also doubled.

Clinton Freeman knocked his third homer of the weekend to lead the Bucs (2-1), who had just four hits but took advantage of three Nittany Lion errors, five walks, a hit batter and a wild pitch. Zach Thompson and Trey York each had two-run doubles during a seven-run fifth inning.

Patton Taylor took the loss for Penn State, which visits Liberty for a three-game series next weekend.
