Former State College swimmer Jenny Ryan helped Grove City win its fifth straight President’s Athletic Conference championship over the weekend.
Ryan swam on three winning freestyle relay teams and also won two individual events at the three-day meet.
The senior won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 7.17 seconds and the 400 IM in 4:33.74, meeting the NCAA qualifying time in each event. She also swam on the 200 freestyle relay team (1:35.61), the 800 freestyle relay (7:43.83), and the 400 freestyle relay (3:30.06.). She also placed second in the 100 freestyle in 52.58 seconds.
Wrestling
Mitchell Port (Bellefonte, Edinboro) handed Iowa’s Mark Ballweg only his second loss of the year with a 5-0 decision in a dual meet Friday. Port, ranked No. 5 in the nation at 141 pounds, had two back points, a reversal and riding time for his 11th straight win. He’s 26-3. Iowa won the dual meet, 31-6. Port was named Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week and PSAC Co-Wrestler of the Week. Edinboro is now 9-5. In that dual meet, Iowa’s Tony Ramos topped ex-Tyrone wrestler A.J. Schopp, 9-0.
Steve Bosak (State College, Cornell) won a pair of bouts in the National Duals qualifying tournament, beating Nebraska’s Josh Ihnen, 3-0 in a 19-17 Cornell win. Bosak is now 14-2 while Cornell is 14-3 and headed for the National Duals at Minnesota this weekend.
Leo Wortman (Bellefonte, Stevens Tech) is 6-5.
Erik Galloway (State College, Buffalo) is 12-8. Buffalo is 1-10.
Basketball
Tyann McDaniel (Bellefonte, Misericordia) closed her career with a triple-double against Manhattanville with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. For the year she has 64 rebounds, 84 assists, one block and 36 steals to go with a 9.8 points-per-game scoring average. Misericordia ended the year with a record of 12-13.
Emily Suhey (State College, Villanova) averages 1.6 points per game. She has 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals. Villanova is 18-7.
Brian Scholly (State College, Juniata) has a 16.2 scoring average to go with a 5.0 rebound average, 1.4 assist average and 1.0 steal average. Juniata is 17-8.
Kate McDonald (State College, Juniata) averages 14.0 points, 10.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.2 blocks per game. Juniata is 18-7.
Liz Wortman (Bellefonte, Juniata) is averaging 0.9 points, 0.8 rebounds and 0.4 assists.
Jena Matter (Bellefonte, Mansfield) has 137 rebounds, 42 assists, 11 blocks, 26 steals and a 10.1 points-per-game scoring average. She leads the team in rebounds, blocks and scoring. Mansfield is 4-18.
Mitch Moyer (Bald Eagle Area, PSU-Altoona) has 71 rebounds, 22 assists, 12 steals and a 6.2 scoring average while starting all 24 games. Altoona is 9-15.
Alidia Strouse (State College, PSU-Altoona) has 125 rebounds, 27 assists, 10 blocks, 30 steals and a 7.0 scoring average. Altoona is 3-22.
Pat St. Andrews (State College, PSU-Behrend) has a 4.9 scoring average and also averages 2.6 rebounds, 0.8 assists and 0.4 steals. Behrend is 17-8.
Brittany Butterworth (BEA, Pitt-Greensburg) has 91 rebounds, 42 assists, 21 steals, two blocks and an 8.3 scoring average. Greensburg is 11-14.
Madison Bastress (Penns Valley, Washington & Jefferson) has now played in seven games and has four rebounds, three assists and a 0.7 scoring average. W&J is 18-7.
Softball
Kelly Chambers (BEA, PSU-Altoona) was named an All-America Scholar-Athlete by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. To be selected, an athlete must maintain a 3.5 GPA throughout the year. Chambers led Altoona in hitting with a .474 average, hits with 64, doubles with 19, home runs with 10 and 51 RBIs.
Brittany Smith (Bellefonte, PSU-Altoona) was named an All-America Scholar Athlete by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. She was second on the team in hitting with a a .437 average and had 37 runs, 55 hits, 13 doubles, two homers and 31 RBIs.
Christina Stathes (Bellefonte, PSU-Altoona) was also selected as an All-America Scholar-Athlete by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. She hit .375 with 23 runs scored, 45 hits, six doubles, two triples, five homers and 34 RBIs. Altoona finished the season with a 33-12 record.
Tennis
Christopher Borden (State College, George Mason) won his match 8-4 at No. 2 doubles as George Mason won 7-0 over Mary Washington. Borden is 2-1 for the Patriots (2-1).
Blake Gregory (State College, East Carolina) fell 7-5, 6-3 at No. 6 singles as East Carolina defeated Appalachian State 5-2. Gregory is 0-2 for the Pirates (7-1).
