UNIVERSITY PARK — The Penn State football team is gearing up for its first trip to the Meadowlands in 13 years as it prepares for its season opener against Syracuse at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., on Aug. 31.
We are thrilled with the opportunity to open the 2013 season in a fantastic venue like MetLife Stadium against Syracuse, a team that Penn State has more than 90 years of tradition with on the football field, head coach Bill OBrien said.
With nearly 30,000 Penn State alumni in the New York-New Jersey metro area, we are looking forward to playing in front of a passionate base of Penn State supporters. It will be exciting for our team to open the 2013 season in the same facility that will end the year by hosting Super Bowl XLVIII.
The Nittany Lions and Orange will be meeting for the 71st time, the second-most-played rivalry for Penn State, with their last meeting in 2009.
The Nittany Lions will be playing their season opener at the Meadowlands for the sixth time, with the last against Southern California in 2000.
Penn State will distribute ticket purchase details for the game to Nittany Lion Club members and season ticket holders in the spring. Publuic ticket sales for the game will be held April 22.
