UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State swept the singles matches and beat its first ranked opponent of the season, topping No. 49 Virginia Commonwealth 6-1 Sunday at the Sarni Tennis Center.
Petra Januskova, Chelsea Utting, Jacqueline Zuhse, Devan McCluskey, Carmen Sandor and Sarah Henderson all earned singles wins.
Januskova and Utting won in three sets, and also teamed for the only win in doubles for the Nittany Lions (9-0), while the other four singles matches were won in straight sets.
The Nittany Lions visit Ohio State next Sunday.
