Campus Corner: State College’s St. Andrews comes through in clutch

Pat St. Andrews had two clutch free throws in the final seconds of a 63-60 win over Medaille that gave Penn State-Behrend the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.

St. Andrews, a senior guard from State College, averages 5.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.0 steals per game this year while leading the Lions from the branch campus in Erie in minutes played.

Behrend is 20-8 and will open play in the NCAA tournament at Wooster on Saturday.

Wrestling

Mitchell Port (Bellefonte, Edinboro) pinned Sean Fee of West Virginia and Travis Shaffer of Pitt over the weekend to give him 13 straight wins and a 28-3 record for the year. He is ranked fifth at 141 pounds. Edinboro lost to Pitt 19-18 to finish the regular season at 10-6. Tyrone’s AJ Schopp finished at 27-3.

Steve Bosak (State College, Cornell) finished the regular season 16-2 at 184 pounds, ranked fourth in the nation, after beating Iowa’s Ethan Lofthouse 3-2 in the NWCA National Duals final, which Iowa won 21-16. Cornell finished 14-4 in dual meets.

Scott Bosak (State College, Cornell) finished with a 15-9 record at 149 pounds.

Erik Galloway (State College, Buffalo) is 14-9 at 141. Buffalo finished the season 1-11.

Basketball

Brian Scholly (State College, Juniata) averages 16.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.2 steals and 0.7 rebounds. Juniata lost to Catholic University 63-62 in the Landmark Conference finals to finish the season 18-9. The Eagles were unable to secure an NCAA playoff berth.

Kate McDonald (State College, Juniata) finished the year with a 14.2 scoring average and a 10.4 rebounding average. She also averaged 3.3 assists, 2.2 steals and 1.2 blocks. She scored her 1,000th career point against Drew when she had a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds in the Landmark tournament. Juniata lost in the semifinals to finish 18-8.

Liz Wortman (Bellefonte, Juniata) averaged 0.9 points and 0.8 rebounds for the year.

Jena Matter (Bellefonte, Mansfield) has 149 rebounds, 45 assists, 11 blocks, 29 steals and a 10.5 scoring average. Mansfield is 5-19.

Mitch Moyer (Bald Eagle Area, PSU-Altoona) had 71 rebounds, 22 assists, 12 steals and a 6.2 scoring average. Altoona finished 9-15.

Alidia Strouse (State College, PSU-Altoona) had 125 rebounds, 27 assists, 10 blocks and 30 steals to go with a 7.0 scoring average. Altoona finished at 3-22.

Brittany Butterworth (BEA, Pitt-Greensburg) averaged 5.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and had 43 assists, 40 steals and a block. Greensburg finished with an 11-15 record.

Madison Bastress (Penns Valley, Washington & Jefferson) has played in seven games and has four rebounds, three assists and a 0.7 scoring average. W&J is 20-8.

Swimming

Marie Ginger (State College, Gettysburg) swam on the fourth-place 400-yard freestyle relay team that clinched a third straight Centennial Conference championship for Gettysburg with a time of 3:38.06. She also won the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.33 and earned a silver medal in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2.25.60. In addition, she swam a leg on the 200 medley relay team that finished third in 1:51.54.

Track & field

John Crowe (State College, Susquehanna) ran on the winning distance medley relay team that posted a time of 10:41.86 as Susquehanna placed second in the Landmark Conference meet.

Paul Crowe (State College, Susquehanna) placed sixth in the mile in 4:31.99 in the Landmark meet.

Tennis

Chris Borden (State College, James Madison) received the Provost Award for the second time. To be eligible for the award an athlete must have at least a 3.75 GPA. Borden carries a 3.85 in accounting. He has also won the University Scholar award and has won the Colonial Conference Academic Award twice. He is 2-1 in doubles this spring.

Baseball

Justin Taylor (BEA, California, Pa.) got the win in a 5-0 decision over Charleston, allowing three hits, striking out four in four innings.

AJ Robinson (BEA, Cal of Pa) had five RBIs in a doubleheader sweep of Charleston over the weekend, going 2-for-3with three RBIs in the first game and rapping a two-run, bases-loaded single in the 13-4 win. Cal is off to a 2-0 start.

Brandon Myers (Philipsburg-Osceola, Slippery Rock) is hitting .143 with an RBI.

Matt Curtis (P-O, Slippery Rock) is hitting .111. Slippery Rock is 4-0.

Softball

Chelsea Rex (P-O, St. Francis) picked up the win against Eastern Shore in the North Carolina A&T tournament at Greensboro, N.C. She has pitched 13 innings with a 9.69 ERA, allowing 21 hits, 23 runs (18 earned), 10 walks and 10 strikeouts. St. Francis is 1-4.

Taylor Parsons (BEA, St. Francis) is hitting .533 with three runs scored, eight hits, one double and one triple.

Morgan Coble (P-O, Shenandoah) is hitting .667 with two RBIs. Shenandoah is 1-1.

Lacrosse

Andy Jameson (State College, Eastern) has one goal and two assists. The Eagles are 2-0.
