Penn State wrestling: Luke Frey leads way at National Collegiate Open

Nine Penn State wrestlers participated in the National Collegiate Open on Sunday with four Nittany Lions placing in the event.

Redshirt freshman Luke Frey finished second for Penn State at 149 pounds, going 3-2 with a major decision. Frey lost in sudden victory in the finals to improve to 13-4 on the season.

Wrestling unattached, true freshmen Jimmy Gulibon and Zack Beitz combined for 10 wins at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively. Gulibon notched two technical falls at 133 to go 4-2 and finish fourth. Beitz went 6-2 for fourth place at 141 and turned in two major decisions.

Redshirt freshman Scott Syrek took sixth at 197 pounds. He posted a pin among his wins to go 4-3 on the afternoon.

Redshirt freshman Mike Waters (2-2 at 141), David Owens (2-2 at 149), Rex Lutz (165) and sophomore Brandon Phillips (3-2 at 174) also competed in the event for Penn State.
