Penn State track and field: Will Barr and relay team set Lion records

Will Barr broke his own school record in the 35-pound weight throw Saturday as Penn State athletes took their final shots at qualifying for this weekend’s NCAA Championships.

The national meet will be held Friday and Saturday at Arkansas.

Barr set his record at the VT Final Qualifier with a top throw at 69 feet 10 1/4 inches, breaking his old mark of 68-5 3/4 set the previous weekend at the Big Ten Championships. Also, Marlene Ricketts was second in the triple jump at 41-9 3/4.

At the Alex Wilson Invitational at Notre Dame, Za’Von Watkins was fifth in the 800 in 1:48.92, Sam Masters took third in the 3,000 in 7:59.80, Mahagony Jones was fourth in the women’s 200 in 23.90.

On Friday at Notre Dame, the quartet of Watkins, Brannon Kidder, Brandon Bennett-Green and Robby Creese teamed up to set school and facility records and post the top time in the NCAA this season in the distance medley relay. The 9:26.60 clocking was the second-fastest collegiate time ever run indoors.
