Scholastic ice hockey: State College to play in PIHL Penguins Cup semifinal

The State College ice hockey team us one win away from playing for the Penguins Cup.

The Little Lions (16-7) will play in the PIHL western semifinals at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday against Peters Township.

The game is part of doubleheader of Class AAA games set for Robert Morris University’s Island Sports Center. The second game, set for 7:45 p.m., will pit North Allegheny against Bethel Park.

The winners will face off next Wednesday for the Penguins Cup at Pittsburgh’s Consol Energy Center, with that winner meeting the Flyers Cup champion, representing the eastern winner, in the state finals.

The Little Lions are playing in their first PIHL AAA western semifinal and have won six straight games and 12 of their last 13. They reached the semifinals with a dramatic 4-3 overtime victory over Seneca Valley, with Sey Yeaple netting the game-winner to complete a hat trick.
