BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Penn State opened Big Ten play Friday afternoon with a 9-3 loss to Indiana.
The Hoosiers (16-3, 1-0 Big Ten) earned their ninth straight win following the lead of starter Joey DeNato (3-1), who struck out 10 while giving up five hits, two walks and only one run over 7 1/3 innings.
T.J. Jann (1-3) took the loss, giving up six runs, four earned, on six hits and three walks while striking out four over 6 2/3 innings.
J.J. White had a pair of hits and Matt Paradise doubled for the Nittany Lions (5-12, 0-1). Aaron Novack plated two of the teams three runs.
Five of Indianas 10 hits went for extra bases, including a three-run homer for Scott Donley in the first inning.
The teams meet for a doubleheader starting at noon Saturday.
