Letter to the editor | Unacceptable behavior

March 27, 2013

Psychologist Richard Scott Lenhart’s statements disputing claims of sexual misconduct with patients are specious rationalizations of wrongful behavior (“State College psychologist denies inappropriate sexual relationships with abuse victims,” CDT, March 3).

Lenhart claims that sexual contact with a patient was “part of her treatment.”

Any sexual contact with patients is expressly prohibited by the ethical code of conduct for psychologists. This code is intended to protect patients, and it is not intended to be interpreted by individual practitioners regarding when or if sexual conduct is “therapeutic.”

As a psychologist, I am outraged that Lenhart frames his unprofessional, unethical and harmful behavior as “therapeutic.”

He is a danger and a disgrace to the profession.
