High school baseball: Bald Eagle Area wins season opener

From CDT staff reportsMarch 29, 2013

— Bald Eagle Area could not have asked for a better first inning of the high school baseball season.

Ben Verbitskey cranked a grand slam as part of a nine-run first inning, although the Eagles could not follow up with any more scoring, in a 9-4 win over Central at the Milesburg Teener League Field on Tuesday.

Dylan Womer, Cole Long and Logan Reese all added RBI singles in the big inning. Verbitskey finished 2-for-4.

“We only had six hits, but they were quality hits,” BEA coach Jim Gardner said. “For not having any scrimmages, this was our first time against live pitching, we only had four strikeouts. That’s a positive.”

Eagle pitchers Womer and Jon Romine combined to give up seven hits, with Womer striking out seven over four innings for the win.
