UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State took an early lead and mounted a late rally but fell to Michigan, 7-4 at Beard Field on Friday.
The Nittany Lions home opener took a positive slant nearly right from the start. Cassidy Bell blasted a two-run homer to left field that also plated Alyssa Sovereign who had reached on her own hit moments earlier. But Michigan (26-7) rebounded to post a three-run second inning and added two more in each of the fourth and seventh innings.
Sovereign added two more hits to tie her career high and pitcher Macy Jones finished her fifth complete game of the season for Penn State (7-17) with five strikeouts.
Bells first-inning blast her 14th of the season and pulled her closer to Penn States career home runs leader Shannon Salsburg. Bell is three away from tying Salsburgs career record of 34 homers.
Penn State will play a doubleheader against the Wolverines Saturday.
