UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State rallied for two runs in the ninth, but Purdue scored in the 10th to hand the Nittany Lions their 12th straight loss with a 5-4 win on Saturday.
Sean McHughs RBI single gave Purdue (9-14 overall, 2-3 Big Ten) victories in the first two games of the weekend series. Game 3 has been moved to 11 a.m. Sunday because of a poor weather forecast.
Penn State (5-17, 0-5) tied it in the ninth. Ryky Smith led off with a single and Sam August walked. With Alex Farkes pinch-running for August, both runners moved up on Tyler Kendalls sacrifice bunt. Luis Montesinos followed with a pinch-hit RBI single and Farkes came home on the throw to the plate to tie the score.
Kendalls sacrifice fly in the fifth and RBI double in the seventh plated the other Penn State runs. Smith had three hits and scored twice.
Kyle Wood had three hits for the Boilermakers. Penn State starter Steven Hill allowed eight hits and three earned runs over seven innings. David Walking (1-2) took the loss.
