UNIVERSITY PARK — Michigan batters continued to pound on Penn State pitching as the No. 14 Wolverines swept a weekend series with the Nittany Lions with 18-4 and 9-6 wins on Saturday at Beard Field.
The Wolverines (28-7 overall, 6-0 Big Ten) had 17 hits in the opener and 14 more in the nightcap. They also had 11 in a win Friday.
Sierra Romero smashed two home runs and drove in four in the opener. Winning pitcher Sara Driesenga (19-6) helped herself with two hits and five RBIs. Reina Furuya had a two-run homer to pace Penn State (7-19, 0-3).
The Nittany Lions trailed 7-0 in the nightcap, but scored six times in the bottom of the fifth. Alyssa Sovereign, Cassidy Bell, Furuya, Liz Presto and Kailyn Johnson each had an RBI in the outburst.
Lauren Sweet smacked an RBI double in the Wolverines next at-bat, capping a 4-for-4 game with five RBIs. Sweet homered and Romero also went deep for the 14th time this season.
Johnson had two hits for Penn State.
