High school volleyball: State College nets first volleyball win

From CDT staff reportsApril 3, 2013

After two losses to start the season, the State College boys’ volleyball team earned its first win with a 3-1 (25-20, 24-26, 26-24, 25-22) victory over Cumberland Valley on Tuesday night.

Eric DeShong and John Dorsey led the Little Lions (1-2) in kills with 15 and 11, respectively.

“This was actually a really big win for us,” said State College head coach Kim-Li Kimel. “We haven’t started off a season with two losses maybe ever. We were all anxious to get a win under our belts.”

Some of that anxiety subsided early after State College won the first game 25-20. It was the team’s first win this season.

“That first game was a huge one because we hadn’t won a game all season,” Kimel said. “So that win in the first was like ‘okay we can do this.’”

The second and third games were also closely contested, but State College rallied thanks to Deshong, Dorsey and four aces by Deniz Demerci. Noah Hanahan also added two digs, while Demerci added eight.

State College will play in the Bobcat Invitational at Northeastern on Saturday.

“We’re going to have to earn every win we get this season so it was nice to get this one,” Kimel said. “We were pleased with how we responded tonight.”
