BELLEFONTE — Sarah Menna capped a big day at the plate by driving in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Bellefonte outlasted Clearfield for a 5-4 softball victory at OLeary Field.
Vanessa Cooper led off the inning by smacking a a double down the left field line. Menna followed with a single to center, her third hit of the game. Cooper raced around to score, narrowly beating Miyala Ebelings throw to the plate.
Earlier in the inning, the Lady Red Raiders Stevi Confer worked out of big jam. Clearfield had runners at first and third with one out and the bases loaded with two outs, but did not score. Confer also got out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning.
We pitched and played some defense to get out of those jams, Bellefonte coach Gregg Kohlhepp said. We made some mistake, but we were able to play through them. Confer threw a great game and was able to feed the defense.
Menna, playing in just her second varsity game, drove in three runs. Cooper had two hits. Confer allowed six hits, walked three and struck out four.
Devyn Ireland had three hits for the Bison (0-2). Rachel Hoffman allowed six hits, walked two and fanned nine.
